Current context

According to the latest State Survey on the Use of Drugs among Secondary Students 2012-2014 (ESTUDES), the most popular drugs among students aged 14 to 18 continue to be alcohol, tobacco and cannabis, followed by hypnosedatives, cocaine and ecstasy.

Alcohol consumption took a worrying upturn in 2012, with 81.9% having drunk it in the last year and 74% in the last month. This trend only occurred among the younger age group, aged between 14 and 15.

The new way of relating to drugs is called recreational use. This refers to taking legal and illegal drugs that are normally seen to be associated with leisure time, particularly with weekend night-life.

The "la Caixa" Foundation is aware that the best way of preventing the risks and consequences brought about by taking drugs is to inform young people and anyone in contact with them on the effects of addictive substances and offer training and guidance. It is setting up a programme aiming to prevent drug consumption across the board.
